Legislative Intern

The office of State Representative Sharon Tyler is currently looking to fill several internship positions. Interns are expected to provide assistance to the Representative and members of her staff ranging in the areas of legislation, communications, constituent affairs, general office management and miscellaneous tasks.
Students will gain valuable hands-on office experience in a fast-paced environment. Hours are negotiable. This is an unpaid position, but college credit is possible. (See your school’s Internship Coordinator.) Students from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. Responsibilities may include answering phones, monitoring legislation, research and written correspondence to groups and individuals within the 78th District, attending/organizing district events, attending committee meetings, writing press releases, office tasks and organization, and more as determined by interests and qualifications. Previous office experience, letter writing skills and knowledge of the Legislature and legislative process is a plus but not required. Computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office applications is required. Excellent telephone, written communication skills and a positive attitude preferred.



Assessing Intern

The City of East Lansing and Meridian Charter Township Assessing Departments are seeking applicants fro several temporary, part-time field inspector positions to begin immediately. These positions require candidates to work primarily outdoors and to have direct contact with the public. Incumbents in teh positions will be required to measure, inventory and record property information. Computer skills are necessary as the work also involves the entry of property information into assessing software. Training will be provided, but an understanding GIS and building/construction knowledge are a must. Must have own transportation and valid driver's license.

Strategy Intern (Office of the Governor)

Communications Intern

This internship will provide experience to an individual in the areas of marketing communications, community relations, and media services. The internship will be located at the East Lansing Technology Innovation Center.

Position Summary
Self-directed and dynamic individual interested in learning about communications in a business incubator and government environment. Primary responsibilities include writing for internal and external audiences, as well as working on a variety of short-term communications projects. Journalism or Communications degree preferred.

This is a part-time temporary position for the summer of 2012 only. It includes a commitment of 15 hours a week at a pay of $7.25 an hour. The internship will begin the week of May 7, 2012 and end the week of July 30, 2012.

Principal Accountability
· Organize, gather and analyze information for a variety of projects.
· Draft copy for press releases, social networking sites (such as facebook.com/twitter) and
marketing materials
· Participate in community outreach and activities as available

Knowledge and Skills
· Excellent writing skills, with the ability to write for both print and electronic media
· Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment on an independent basis
· Able to keep regular office hours

Qualifications
Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and student must be pursuing a Bachelors or advanced degree in an applicable discipline. Class Credit or Work-Study credits will be considered for applicants. The Intern will work under the supervision of the City of East Lansing’s Community Development Specialist.



IT Student Assistant

This is an IT Student Assistant position.  As such the employee will support the agency in a variety of Information Technology endeavors.  The roles that they support would be a key factor and may include one or more of the following activities:

Participate in the development, implementation and maintenance of applications used by various state agencies.

Participate in the design, development, implementation and maintenance of public-facing and internal web sites.

Work with those responsible for the overall quality, operation, design and security of the web site, in addition to daily routine support.

Participate in the design, development, implementation and maintenance of IT applications written in a variety of development languages.

Database management tasks including database design, creating and running queries and stored procedures, forecasting future growth, migrating to newer versions of the database, performance tuning, SQL query optimization, and assisting with data migration for newly developed applications.

Participate in configuration management and release management tasks with database administrators and application developers.

Assist database administrators, application developers and business owners to ensure the quality of application updates by doing configuration management.

Assist with the development and administration of quality control standards and software testing methodologies.

Using the assigned Division's change management process and tools, control the application software change process to ensure that version retro-grades do not occur.

Develop operational and installation procedures for communication systems, hardware, network security, storage and software.

Photography Intern

The photography position consists of assisting our Caucus photographer with setting appointments, editing and providing light camera shooting. Interns also may work on other areas of public relations when needed, including video production and writing. Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and digital photography are a plus. Field research interns assist the field staff by researching key issues in house districts as well as updating and developing district profiles. Interns regularly meet with and collect information from Representatives and their staff, update the district database and assist with pinpointing press event locations and press event attendees.
