Popular Lesbian Hangout Reopens as Corner Bar and Grill

The popular recently closed 505 lesbian bar will soon be known as The Corner Bar & Grill.

According to excerpts from the article:

The popular lesbian hangout at 505 E. Shiawassee St., Lansing, was a staple downtown for nearly 15 years, famous for bingo nights and other themed events, before owners Kathy Nicoll and Dee Andrews decided to hang it up. Now a new business is coming to the old spot, The Corner Bar & Grill, squelching some women’s hopes that another lesbian bar would open there.

On Saturday the Corner Bar & Grill opened for drinks, and owner Curt Turner hopes to have it fully up and running in the next week or two. Turner, whose experience includes management work with the original East Lansing Troppo, as well as Harrison’s Roadhouse and The Riviera Café, said the new establishment would be a neighborhood bar where people don’t have to get “super dressed up to hang out and have a beer.” He plans to have live music, DJs and pool, and a simple bar food menu to get started.

Although it isn’t a lesbian establishment, Turner said anyone is welcome to patronize the bar. On Saturday, he said a group of former Club 505 customers visited to see what the place was about. “It seemed like they all had a good time, the new faces that I brought and the folks who had hung out here previously.”

During the lead up to the opening, rumor buzzed as to what the new bar would be, as members of the e-mail list of Suits and the City, a non-profit organization that holds monthly networking events for gay and lesbian professionals, exchanged information and planned a visit.
