The City of Lansing increased its Promoting Active Communities (PAC) rating from bronze to silver in 2007, recognizing the city's increased effort toward being a walkable, healthy community.
The PAC rating is based on how well a community supports physical activity. Participating cities are rated based on planning and policies, current environment and programming and promotion.
Risa Wilkerson, with the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, says there’s several reasons Lansing’s ranking improved. The city’s bus system, Capital Area Transportation Authority (CATA), was nationally recognized by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) for being first in efficiency and effectiveness in the country. It also added bike racks to the front of every bus.
The city has also created a new walking and biking task force, added benches and trees to enhance the streetscape, and marked local bike routes.
