Capital Gains Speaker Series: For The Love of Cities

On Monday, June 27 at 6:15 pm, at Art Alley (1133 S. Washington Ave., in  REO Town), Peter Kageyama will be joining us to discuss the state of a city and what can be done to make it a place you will always love.

Peter Kageyama is the author of For the Love of Cities - a book about “lovable cities” and the emotional connections that we have with some places versus others, and what can happen when a city taps into that "emotional wellspring."

Here's an excerpt: We see the benefits of love in everything. When children, pets, plants and even objects are loved, they thrive. (Yes, even objects.  Compare the car owned by a car lover to the cars owned by the rest of us! ) The same is true of our places.

When we love our city, as when we love another person, we will go to extraordinary lengths for them.  We will sacrifice for them; we will push ourselves for them; we will tolerate their shortfalls; we will forgive their excesses–all because we see their true nature. When we have an emotional connection to our place, we are less likely to leave it and far more likely to champion and defend it in the face of criticism.

Kageyama has traveled across the globe speaking about grassroots community development and the amazing people that are making change happen. Suffice it to say, we are thrilled to have such a respected thought leader speaking at our Speaker Series!

Refreshments will be available.
