Grand Rapids-based Triangle Associates is working furiously to get the $7 million renovation of Michigan State University's (MSU) Owen Hall finished by the time the students return in the fall.
The 270,000 square foot building hasn't been renovated since the 1960s. Construction firm Triangle Associates is primarily renovating 5,000 square feet of the graduate dorm, but the entire building is closed for renovations.
The renovations include the complete demolition of the lower level and main floor. The former dining area and cafe will be replaced with a vendor market and the offices, reception area and apartments will also get an update. The loading dock on the exterior of the building will be expanded to accommodate the university's recycling program.
"If you talk to anyone at MSU, they're in the process of updating many of their dorms to create updated living environments for their students to keep them competitive on campus," says Brent Gibson, Owen Hall Project Manager. "They're really trying to entice more graduate students to stay on campus."
The project is expected to be finished by the end of the month.
