$3.5 Million NuUnion Investment Rejuvenates Vacant Southside Hotel

NuUnion Credit Union is transforming the vacant Regent Inn at 6501 Cedar Street into its Southside branch. The $3.5 million investment will give NuUnion a 4,000 square foot branch that’s easily accessible from I-96.

“We chose this because the location gives our customers easy access from both Cedar and Pennsylvania,” says Tim Murphy with NuUnion.

NuUnion will start demolishing the old hotel immediately after approval from the State of Michigan. NuUnion will use State of Michigan brownfield funds to help offset development costs.

“Over time we will definitely add more employees,” Murphy says.

Rather than trashing all of the remaining lampshades, furniture and miscellaneous items left in the hotel, NuUnion donated it to local nonprofit organizations including Volunteers of America, Haven House and Capital Area Child and Family Services.

“Lansing has been very good to NuUnion,” says NuUnion President and CEO Stephan Winninger. “We’ve been in business in this city for 56 years and since that time NuUnion has grown to over 88,000 members. But we’ve never stopped calling Lansing home. Our main office is located right downtown on Capitol Avenue, and we have four other branches in the city alone. So we’re very committed to Lansing and the people who live and work here, which was also why it was so important to us to donate the usable items from the former business to local charitable organizations.”
