When plans were rolled out for the 7,200 square foot senior center in Delhi Township, the municipality was adamant about adding green components to the building.
Now, not only does the building include a geothermal closed-loop ground source heat pump, it also includes an innovative green roof, which will be installed before the opening of the building.
“This is much better than most green roofs in respect to what Live Roof has done,” says Site Superintendent Mark VanDeventer, with Wieland-Davco.
Live Roof is a Holland-based company that creates one by two foot pods that connect together to fill out a roof. Plants are grown inside the pods and once they’ve reached an inch in height, they are installed on the roof.
The Live Roof technique is unique because it’s not as high -maintenance as other systems. For example, if a plants in one pod die, the pod, rather than an entire section of the roof, can easily be replaced.
“It’s just like you were going to Meijer and picking up a flat of flowers,” VanDeventer says. “They’re all grown and they look like plants in 45-60 days.”
This green roof is projected to soak up 9/10 of an inch of rainwater, cleaning the water before it becomes storm water. The roof will also save roughly 35-50 percent in air conditioning costs.
The new senior center is located at 2108 Cedar St. in Delhi Township.
